As I began to recover from breast
cancer surgery,
I felt as if I was coming out of the shadows into life again.

The title flashed into my mind
when I was thinking of those
instants of memory that overtake one sometimes.

The title is taken from a line
in a Shakespearean sonnet:
"and summer's lease has all too short a date."
