Strip Quilt Directions

Foundation pieces-
* Cut squares at desired measurement, of either fabric or paper. I use
fabric and cut at 8.5” a total of 30 blocks. This allows for an
8” finished block and not having to remove paper. A finished quilt
dimension of 48” by 40”.
Strips-
* Have plenty of strips available at varying measurements. I use strips
between 2.25” and 1.25” wide. These are not exact measurements;
any size will do, but I don’t think it looks as nice being wider
and it becomes more difficult to sew with small strips.
Sewing-
* Place the first strip right side up diagonally across the foundation
piece extending over the corners at least .5”.
* Place the second strip over the first strip wrong side up, strips
will be right sides together, matching the two at one of the longest
raw edge sides and covering foundation piece on both sides at least
.5”.
* Sew through all three thicknesses with a .25” seam.
* Open the second strip and repeat with a third strip ironing as you
go.
* Continue adding strips until you have covered one half of the piece.
Your last piece should cover the corner extending .5” over the
foundation piece.
* Turn foundation piece over and follow above steps to cover the other
half.
Trim-
* Using a square ruler with the foundation piece facing you trim the
strip sewn foundation piece to desired measurement. I would trim to
8.5”.
Assembly-
* Arrange and sew blocks together with .25” seams. There are several
arrangements possible by rotating the blocks. Arranging blocks 5 across
and 6 down for a 48” by 40” quilt.
Finishing-
* Batting is not necessary with fabric foundation pieces, but necessary
with paper. I prefer to use batting.
* Cut back to fit top. Quilt and bind as desired. For 48” by 40”
quilt you’ll need 1.5 yards.

Foundation pieces-
* Draw a diagonal line across foundation piece.
Sewing-
* Starting in the middle place first strip right side up .25" over
drawn line.
* Place second strip wrong side up on top of first strip sew .25"
seam.
* Open the second strip and repeat with a third strip ironing as you
go.
* Continue adding strips to the right until you have covered one quarter
of the foundation piece.
* Repeat on the left side of first strip until the other one quarter
of the foundation piece is covered.
* Sew strip to cover .25" of sewn strips (portion in first bullet
extending over drawn line). This strip will start wrong side up over
sewn strips. Open strip.
* Continue adding strips until you have covered the foundation piece.

Foundation pieces-
* Draw a diagonal line across foundation piece.
Strips-
* Cut 4" long strips in various widths.
Sewing-
* Starting in the middle place first strip right side up centered over
drawn line.
* Place second strip wrong side up on top of first strip sew .25"
seam.
* Open the second strip and repeat with a third strip ironing as you
go.
* Continue adding strips to the right until you have covered one half
of the middle of the foundation piece.
* Repeat on the left side of first strip until the other half of the
middle is covered.
* Sew strip to cover .25" of the top of the sewn strips. This strip
will start wrong side up over sewn strips. Open strip.
* Continue adding strips until you have covered the foundation piece.
* Turn foundation piece and add strips as described in the last two
bullets until you have covered the foundation piece.
