Canyon Quilters Opportunity Quilt is designed, constructed, and quilted by Guild members. Donations are accepted for tickets for the annual drawing to win the Opportunity Quilt.
Opportunity Quilt 2002
The Canyon Quilters 2002 Opportunity Quilt will have sea birds flying across a very pale background of Storm at Sea blocks suggesting a stylized landscape. The border will be made of a challenging star block, done in similar but darker colors.
Fabric Needed
For the background, we need as many fat eighths of the lightest blues, greens, browns, and tans we can gather, especially light blues. If you can donate fabric in these colors, please bring them to the January guild meeting. We will select the best combination and use as many as we can in the quilt. The remainder will be packaged as part of a monthly opportunity drawing or otherwise put to good use by the guild.
Volunteers Needed
Beginning in February, we will hold a series of work sessions on Thursday nights to cut and package kits of the Storm at Sea blocks for distribution to guild members. This will be followed by work sessions to cut and package kits of the star block, and one or two workshops on piecing the blocks. We hope to build enough momentum that these sessions will continue as a second evening bee for the guild. If you are interested in starting and evening bee, or just want to help out with the quilt, call Judith Smith, our bee coordinator.
The committee making the applique bird patterns will meet again after the start of the new year. If you want to help select the birds and draft the patterns, or if you would like to help sew them up, please call Sandy Brow, chair of the Opportunity Quilt 2002.
Joyce Becker has graciously granted permission to use her original block designs from her book Quilts from Nature in our Opportunity 2002 project. She is also teaching and lecturing for the North County Quilt Guild in Escondido and the Sunshine Guild, should anyone be interested in attending the lecture or workshop.
She is also writing a new book for
the Quilt Digest Press, due out in 2002, focusing on landscape quilts. If anyone
is interested in auditioning qults or knows of an artist who makes wonderful
landscape pieces, she is in the market. She will need to see photos of quilts
and have an explanation of the techniques and processes used.

A fine article about the making of the Millennium 2000 Quilt, written by Canyon Quilter, Tina Rathbone, appeared in the San Diego Union- Tribune on August 29, 1999.
Sheryl King called the winning ticket holder on
Tuesday, the day after the drawing at the November Guild Gala. Was she ever
excited!
