PHILANTHROPY

Since 2003 our members have donated over 2000 quilts for children and teens in need, and Veterans in the San Diego area. Members are encouraged to contribute in various stages of quilt making. At our general meetings members can sit in place and do hand sewing of bindings or attaching labels to finished quilts. There are kits for quilt tops ready to pick up. Our biggest need is at the quilting stage. There are usually quilts that are ready to pick up with batting and backing already pinned, ready for your creative stitching. If you are a Longarm Quilter and need unpinned quilt tops just let the committee know how many you can help out with. Donations of fabric are appreciated especially in need are 1 1/2 yd - 2 yd cuts for backings.

  • PROJECT LINUS
It is the mission of this national organization to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.” The project Linus Committee of Canyon Quilters schedules "Blanket Days" a couple times a year. Check our calendar for the next Blanket day. To find out how you can help, talk to the committee women who are at the Project Linus table at our meetings or contact the national organization. • VETERANS QUILTS
Each year Canyon Quilters donates beautiful finished quilts to Veterans organizations. In 2009 with the help of The Military Order of the Purple Heart which donated $1000 for us to buy fabric and batting, we will complete over 50 quilts. Some will be given to the women in the assisted living unit at the Chula Vista Veterans Home and some will be distributed to the hospice unit at the Veterans Hospital in La Jolla. Many of our members participate in all the steps of making these quilts – organizing the year’s efforts, cutting fabric, piecing and machine quilting. See the women at the Veterans table at our meetings to pick up a quilt to work on or get more information. For more information click here.
