March Lecture & Workshop
Youngmin Lee

Lecture at March 18th Meeting: Bojagi, The Art of Wrapping Cloths. Bojagi (Korean Wrapping Cloths) are pieced together from small scraps of cloth. It is the most unique form of Korean textile art. Bojagi occupied a prominent place in the daily lives of Koreans of all classes. They were used to wrap or carry everything from precious ritual objects to everyday clothes and common household goods and also to cover food.
It is also strikingly contemporary: the designs and colors of bojagi remind one of the works of modern abstract artists. Bojagi can be described as a true form of abstract expressionism.
Youngmin Lee will talk about bojagi during this lecture and show her bojagi works after the lecture.
- Hybrid meeting with speaker in person
- Social time 6pm (for in person) | 6:15pm (for Zoom)
- Evening program 6:30pm
Workshop Sunday, March 17th: Ssamsol Jogakbo. Jogakbo, or patchwork bojagi, embodies the philosophy of recycling, as they are made from remnants of leftover fabric. Thoughtfully arranged shapes and colors in bojagi often show very modern and abstract compositions.
Youngmin will teach basic jogakbo construction in this workshop. Ssamsol is a durable and decorative seam technique where you use two different seam allowances. One seam allowance is twice the width of the other one, so it can cover the smaller seam allowance.
- In-person workshop: 9am to 3pm PST
- Location: Rosie’s Calico Cupboard
- Kit fee: $30, includes assorted cut fabrics, thread, needle, and instruction
- Pay Youngmin at the workshop; she accepts cash, check, or Zelle.

You will explore inspiration, composition, construction, value, and finishing techniques. This class will be limited to 12 students to provide the best experience with LeAnn. Special Instructions. You will be working from your chosen photograph. If you use someone else’s image you must get their permission to do so.

Bring your selected and approved image (in its enlarged form, as well as the original image) to work from.
Working through this process of photo selection will be a big part of your success so please feel free to send the images to LeAnn via gmail and/or call her. LeAnn is available to work with you on this as part of the fee for this class. She’s had students send her three pictures at a time so you can talk through the pros and cons of doing each one and that has worked well. Of course, the final selection is yours.
Your photograph should be at least 16” by 20” so you may need to have it enlarged to the desired size.

September Lecture & Workshop

Lecture at September 16th Meeting: Everything but the Cotton. When quilters don’t have access to a stash of quilter’s cotton, what do they turn to? This one hour lecture, trunk show, and Q & A session shows quilts – antique and modern – made of wool, silk, polyester, and more. The trunk show of Julia’s own work shows what you can create with neckties, saris, kimonos, and other unusual, ‘not cotton’ textiles.

Workshop Sunday, September 15th: Starting with Silk. This workshop has three elements. You’ll begin by determining the fiber content of your fabrics by using the burn test. Julia then covers two very different ways to work with silk. First, a very free, improvisational piecing technique she calls “Pieces, Pairs and Panels” and second, a foundation piecing method that gives stability and ultra-precise results, even with the lightest weight silks.
Working with your stash, you’ll construct elements in these two techniques that can be combined into a small, pillow-sized finished piece. Silk is not required, you may use fabric from your stash to learn the techniques taught in this workshop.
For more information on the workshop, preview this video on Julia’s website. After clicking the link scroll down until you see the video after the class Starting with Silk.

Esterita Austin presents this original technique that utilizes fusible web to transfer your original painted imagery to Organza using metallic acrylic textile paints. You will be able to create a completely new and unique form of art quilt. This process is unlike any other printing process. It is not a reverse process…what you see is what you get. This makes it a breeze to incorporate the written word and numbers into your imagery or to segue into abstraction. Bring an 11″ x 17” or 16” x 20” glossy photo quality of a close up of a favorite place, façade, architecture, or interesting still life for inspiration and interpretation. This is a technique at which anyone can succeed. If you’ve never painted before…you can! Free your creative muse with this new and innovative technique.
Special instructions: To ensure success PLEASE email Esterita (see the supply list) your digital image before class for input on subject matter and to help pick the best image before printing.
