Workshop Sunday, October 18, 2026: Collaging the Laura Heine Way
Susy Nash is a Laura Heine Advanced Certified Instructor. Laura Heine taught Susy her collage techniques, along with the supplies Laura uses. Susy endorses and shares the secrets of making a successful collage quilt the Laura Heine way! Suzy will create her own kits for us, provide the chosen pattern, and offer this class using Laura Heine’s collage methods.
- In-person workshop: 10am to 3pm PT (includes set-up and clean-up)
- Location: Cathy Hopper Friendship Center, 4425 Bannock Ave, SD 92117
- (Required) Kit: $50, includes Laura Heine’s Teeny Tiny Pincushion collage pattern ($30.00 value), plus a selection of partially prepped fabrics for students to use to get started on the Laura Heine Teeny Tiny Pincushion collage project

Lecture January 18, 2027 Guild Meeting: The Exciting Life of a Guatemalan Quilt Artist
This inspirational slide lecture will appeal to both quilters and non-quilters alike. In it, Priscilla tells her amazing story as a quilt maker: what motivated her to start quilting and how she was hooked; the difficulties and obstacles she’s had to overcome; and living in a country without any quilting tradition, community, or resources. Her message is simple: if, against all odds, she was able to achieve what she has…anyone can do it! Priscilla presents with humor, entertaining stories, and lots of insight.
The slides show her sources of inspiration: the Guatemalan textiles and Mayan culture that influence her to create unique art quilts, as well as an overview of her body of work.

The Everything Lecture: Tips, Techniques to Make Your Quilts into Art
Designing your quilt! Make your photos work for you. But let’s go from there. Numerous programs and apps are available to help you create a pattern. We’ll explore how to use these tools alongside the principles of art-lite to enhance your composition, check out your colors and values, and add the emotion to your work that will grab your viewer. We’ll also delve into various art movements and how they can be used in creating art quilts, such as Cubism, Impressionism, and Pop Art. Apps can even assist with this aspect of design! Allow Phyllis to demonstrate these techniques and showcase examples from her collection to illustrate the concepts.
And Phyllis has a few tricks up her sleeve to actually make Impressionist, Cubist, stained glass, landscape, and portrait quilts.

Wet Felted Flowers with Beaded Centers
In this workshop, you’ll create easy and colorful flowers using a little wool roving, soap, and water. Phyllis will guide you through every step, demonstrating a couple of different styles. Following that, you’ll dive into easy and quick beadweaving, creating centers that resemble intricate, time-consuming work. These centers can also be used for earrings or pendants. You’ll learn two fun techniques in this single workshop, opening up a world of creative possibilities. We bet you won’t be able to make just one!
- In-person workshop: 9:30am to 3:30pm PT
- Location: Personal residence in Vista. Car pooling will be arranged as much as possible.
- (Required) Kit: $30, includes all materials and use of all tools

Lecture Tuesday, March 2, 2027: The Reasons for Quilts
In Edyta’s presentation she reflects on quilters work and how they find inspiration to create, to express, and to mark milestones in their lives. The program is full of historical information, as well as touching personal stories that many quilters can relate to. Edyta presents a large collection of quilts, that entertain and inspire you with many reasons to continue to create and enjoy quilting.
This lecture will be presented at a joint Guild meeting with Seaside Quilters at Pacific Beach Presbyterian Church, 1675 Garnet Ave, San Diego, CA 92109.
- In-person meeting only (no Zoom option for this lecture)
- Evening program begins at 6pm PT
- Please be on time so we don’t disrupt Seaside’s Guild meeting prior to the lecture.
Workshop Thursday, March 4, 2027: Shooting Star
Edyta’s easy-to-use Shooting Star template makes creating gorgeous blocks a breeze. During this class, we’ll cover cutting, piecing, and pressing techniques. Let’s make a wish together on our Shooting Stars!
You’ll create three star blocks in this class, perfect for a table runner. Alternatively, you can begin a quilt using this beautiful design. You receive the Shooting Star in the workshop kit and Edyta’s website also features the Blooming Star pattern, which utilizes the same star, offering students ample options for creating a full quilt.
- In-person workshop: 10am to 4pm PT
- Location: The Station (Retreat Center)

- (Required) Kit: $60, includes Shooting Star pattern, template, and fabric for 3 practice blocks

Artistry through Appliqué
A natural storyteller, David will share images of his pictorial appliqué quilts with humorous anecdotes about each one, as well as his creative process. This oral history of the progression from his first quilt top (made in high school) to his current master work some 50 years later, will keep you in stitches.

Free Motion Quilting Basics
This is a fast-paced class designed for beginners to learn basic free-motion machine quilting techniques using your own home machine. As we work through a series of quilt “sandwiches” that will get everyone moving, students will also learn how to adjust their machine’s tension for perfect stitching. Please ensure your machine is clean, in good working condition, and equipped with a new needle, and keep in mind that all machines must have free-motion quilting ability.

- Kit: No fee, which includes all pre-washed fabric and batting sandwiches, and special needle

Lecture May 17, 2027 Guild Meeting: Adapting an Image for an Art Quilt
Driven by a lifelong interest in photography, Sandra began creating amazing art quilts from her photographs, which sparked her journey into raw-edge collage art quilts. This technique serves as a perfect way to blend her two interests and produce work with stunning photorealistic detail. In this lecture, she will showcase her beautiful quilts while sharing her creative process.

2-Day Workshop Saturday and Sunday, May 15-16, 2027: Prickly Pear
In this workshop students learn the technique of raw edge fused collage with the use of textile ink markers and color pencils to add details and realistic features to fabrics. Finished quilt size is approximately 14” by 18”.
Sandra prepared kits for this workshop, which contain the pattern and her hand-dyed fabrics. You can bring additional fabrics to add to the kit or purchase some of Sandra’s hand-dyed fabrics during the workshop…or do both!
- 2-day in-person workshop
- Saturday: 9am to 4pm PT
- Sunday: 10am to 3pm PT
- Location: Cathy Hopper Friendship Center, 4425 Bannock Ave, SD 92117
- (Required) Purchase either the a) kit or b) pattern and bring your own fabric
- Kit: $55, includes the pattern plus enough hand-dyed fabric for the project
- Pattern: $20, and bring sufficient fabric and scraps for a 14″ by 18″ composition. And if you change your mind at the workshop about bringing fabric, then Sandra will have some of her hand-dyes available for purchase.
- When you attend the workshop, please pay for your purchases directly to the instructor. Sandra accepts all forms of payment.
- Supply list for Prickly Pear workshop
- The supply list is written with just the kit information. Sandra recommends that students plan to purchase the kit, as some of the colors would be difficult to find otherwise, and commercially printed goods are not appropriate for the technique and the design. If anyone chooses to add other fabrics from their stash, they may do so.

Kawandi
A Kawandi is a utility quilt handcrafted by the African Diaspora/Siddi community in India. To practice this age-old art, you only need a spool of thread, a needle, a few fabric scraps, and mindful stitching, all brought together through a simple technique. As you learn the step-by-step process and unique methods for creating your own small quilt, you will discover how this improvisational practice helps you harmonize your mind and body with the rhythm of stitching. Beyond the technique, you can explore various ways to personalize your quilt, finding a sense of calm while telling your own stories through your stitches.
